Birmingham’s MeMe Detroit put on a spectacular evening at Deadwax in Digbeth for his launch of her latest single Good Life (talking ’bout the) and EP fundraising show for her next EP released in 2026. She had put on an evening with her and her band in two sets, with an unplugged set and all energy full band set. She had also invited a great selection of guests to feature during the evening including Chloe Mogg, Emily Drummond (aka short girl with long hair from Cherry Dead band), (who sadly couldn’t make it due to ill health), Georgia Hardy of Lokko band and Creedite band and Blue Nation (husband Neil Murdock, Luke Weston and Nick Sharman).

The evening also contained a raffle, art exhibition and brand-new merchandise. Some of the art, created by MeMe, had been created on the day of the single launch.

MeMe’s band was: MeMe Detroit (vocals & acoustic guitar, ukulele and electric guitar), Kallim McEwan (acoustic guitar, drums & vocals) and Abbey Welch (bass). Kallim was on acoustic guitar during the unplugged set and back on drums in the all-energy full band set.

The unplugged set kicked off with the band only on ‘Mean Rock n Roller’ a lively multi harmony gritty number, but mellower as acoustic, and ‘Stand Up Your Living’ with strong vocals, twin acoustic guitar and solid bass underpinning it.

Then the first of her guests joined with Chloe Mogg joining on vocals on ‘Got A Feeling’ with lovely joint harmonies from MeMe and Chloe and a lovely Spanish guitar style break from Kallim.

The next song ‘How She Runs’ was dedicated by MeMe to her late father who died earlier in 2025 with lovely plaintive vocals from MeMe and harmonies with Kallim.

MeMe then sang the next song ‘Foxy’s Folk Face’ in the middle of the audience with her husband Neil Drummond on acoustic guitar & vocals. This was lit by a multitude of mobile phone torches in a very evocative style.

Then back on-stage MeMe and Kallim gave us a brand-new song with ‘Listen If You Want to Hear It’ with dual acoustic guitars with MeMe’s strong vocals with Kallim on lead guitar.

Then the next guest joined MeMe onstage with Blue Nation’s Luke Weston on mandolin and MeMe on ukulele for ‘Song for Leils’ with its strong passionate vocals.

Then to finish the unplugged set the band finished with ‘Green Monday’ (which was linked to one of the displayed artworks) with dual acoustic guitars and bass on a mellow paced song with great lead guitar picking and multi harmonies.’ Run Riot’ which was a quick paced punk style song and the new single ‘Good Life (Talking ‘bout the)’ another quick paced punk style song with strong vocals & guitars.

During the break Neil Murdock had been persuaded to run the raffle draw, which he did in his unique style, never been short of a word or two when playing with Blue Nation!

Now in full energy full band mode, with Kallim on drums and MeMe on electric guitar, they started with ‘Run Riot’ which was much more powerful with lots of shimmy and great guitar work from Meme. This was followed by ‘Will You Be My Lie’ with strident vocals from MeMe on a powerful song with Kallim on backing vocals, with a quieter middle section.

Now with audience participation we had ‘Can’t Get You Out of My Mind’ with heavy drums & bass to start with alt vocals from MeMe.

Then Chloe Mogg joined on vocals for two songs on ‘Get Down On With Me’ and the classic Fleetwood Mac song ‘Dreams’ with its twin female harmonies with a heavy rhythm section.

The band then gave a fans favourite ‘Roaring With The Preachers’ with its very heavy beat, drums, solid bass with strident vocals from MeMe.

The Neil Murdock joined MeMe on stage, both on electric guitar and backing vocals on ‘Emily’.

The next couple of songs included a mashup with ‘Wicked Heat Shaped Game’ and joined by Georgia Hardy on guitar on ‘Mean Rock n Roller’ with its twin electric guitars, heavy rhythm section and great vocals from MeMe. Then for ‘Aerials’ Georgia stayed on stage and was joined by Blue Nation’s Luke Weston on vocals and Nick Sharman on electric guitar, with MeMe on joint vocals with Luke. This was a powerful combination with lots of power and passion.

Then the new single ‘Good Life (Talking ‘bout the)’ was played again but with the band with heavy quick drums to start, strident vocals from MeMe with lots of energy.

The full energy band set was completed with ‘How She Runs’ a 1980s soundtrack from the film My Saviour, which MeMe said was a bit of a bop!, ‘Doc Med Junkies’ with its heavy beat and wailing guitar on offbeat and powerful intense vocals, ‘Roses’ and ‘Churchside Inn’ with MeMe disappearing into the crowd whilst playing guitar.

As an encore the band played their new single again.
