Birmingham’s Big Wolf Band thrilled the audience at The Deer Barn in Burton on Trent on one of their last gigs before an enforced sabbatical.

The band have an ever-increasing set of fans, picked up over 10+ years, with their high energy blues songs, and their line-up was Jonathan Earp (vocals & guitar), Mick Jeynes (bass), Tim Jones (drums), Justin Johnson (guitar & vocals) and Arran Shanghavi (keys).

This break is necessary as lead singer and guitarist Jonathan Earp undergoes surgery in early August following a recent prostate cancer diagnosis. Jon also manages Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a connective tissue disorder. True to his character, Jon wants to be transparent about the mental health struggles that arise when he is unable to play music, aiming to channel his experience into raising vital awareness for others.

This was a night at a great venue in the Staffordshire countryside where the band kicked off the night of blues and rock with ‘Heaven’s Got the Blues’ which is a great raunchy number with a great solo break from Jon, which the band went straight into ‘Done Wrong By You’ which is a classic R&B song with more guitar break excellence and interplay with Arran on keys.

A song where Arran’s jazz keys influence was seen was ‘Just a Little bit of You’ with its funky tune, great offbeat bass, twin guitars with Arran’s jazzy keys and solid drums from Timbo. Changing the tempo and feeling we had ‘Darker Side of You’ which is a slower passionate song with great evocative vocals, echoey guitar and solid rhythm section, before an anthemic finale.

‘Super Animal’ is the song that Jon tests the crowd to see if his guitar riffs are good enough before the song gets going with attitude to a great bluesy beat with its heavy rhythm section. Next was ‘Unbroken Love’ a new song with its great R&B beat and strident vocals from Jon with funky backing.

To finish the first set, we had ‘Lay it on the Line’ with a raunchy funky beat, great guitar play & vocals from Jon, then ‘Rolling with Thunder’ with Justin Johnson on lead vocals with its keys interplay and then ‘If I Ever Lived Another Woman’ a song released in 2017 with multimillion streams and the bands most streamed song. It is a slower R&B song with passionate guitar and keys with solid rhythm section and impassioned vocals from Jon.

Then after a short break for food and drink re-supply the band came back with the rocky ‘Living on Borrowed Time’ followed by another with ‘Valley of the Fallen Kings’ a classic blues rock song with strident vocals from Jon.

‘Got Me Reeling’ – is another great R&B number with funky backing and powerful vocals from Jon and supportive keys from Arran, followed by ‘What’s the Deal’ another new song with its powerful up beat tempo, full on guitars and Jon’s strident vocals.

‘6 Strings Loaded’ another fans favourite included a bass solo from the returning founder member Mick Jeynes. Then ‘Standing in the Rain’ which is a personal song for Jon who lives with depression and EDS, and is a slower tempo song but with passionate sounding guitar and vocals.

Next was a cover of a Freddie King song ‘Have you Ever Loved a Woman’ with its great bluesy guitar & keys solo from Arran. Another cover was ‘Going Down’ which starts with offbeat piano from Arran before it kicks in heavy on this crowd pleaser blues number.

‘Black Dog Blues’ is another chirpy (according to Jon) song about depression with great rolling guitar, heavy beat with more guitar keys interplay. Followed by ‘Money & Run’ which is another new song which is a quick tempo blues rock song with solid rhythm section. To finish we had Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Voodoo Child’ with a mash up into portions of rock songs from the 1970/80s, including AC/DC's 'Back in Black', with Wah Wah pedal with Jon’s guitar.

After standing applause he had for an encore ‘Empire and a Prayer’ which is a classic blues rock song with great beat & tempo and powerful vocals from Jon.

This was a tour de force from a brilliant blues rock band with lots of attitude and character.
